2009 – Battle Studies…
John Mayer’s third album Continuum was a favorite for all of us. He talked of how the recording process involved in the album was like nothing he had ever before experienced. Officially released September 12, 2006, the album represtented a major shift in musical style. More than ever before, John Mayer showed us all his blues side. This album brought Mayer to a whole new level. Album favorites are “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room”, “Daughters”, and the 2008 Grammy Award nominated single “Belief”.
Heavier Things was a complete release for John Mayer. He let all the creative juices out and blew everyone away. He even recorded much of the album in his apartment in New York. He even got final approval on all radio-edits. Columbia put together a creative and interesting marketing scheme for the album and it may have paid off as the album eventually was #1 on the charts. But, an interesting and thought-provoking statement was made by John Mayer when he gave his opinion of the album: “Am I the only one who finds this record creepy to make out to?” Yes John, you are one of the only ones who finds it creepy to make out to.
This album’s title has reference to Hank Mobley’s No Room for Squares album. This album was re-released by Columbia records after signing on John Mayer. The track “3×5″ was added to the re-release. Three tracks from Inside Wants Out are featured on this album. John Mayer began to gain popularity as he toured playing songs from this album, gaining a rapid-growing fan base. Room for Squares climbed the charts all the way to #8. The album cover was received with mixed emotions and reviews, but obviously it didn’t matter too much.
When John Mayer was nineteen years old, he entered into Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Shortly after he moved back to Atlanta to start a music duo called LoFi Masters with an old friend, Clay Cook. After quick sucess and recognition, the two parted ways due to some musical differences. Inside Wants Out is the debut EP that launched John Mayer’s career. Clay Cook has a significant part in about half of the eight songs on the album. Major highlights from this album are Mayer’s first single, “No Such Thing” and a fan favorite “Comfortable.” Inside Wants Out reached #22 on the charts.
